Confession
Heavenly Father, like Jonah, we too have gone astray. We have not listened to you or obeyed your command. We have done our own thing and gone our own way.
We are sorry.
Thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, who forgives us and has made us clean. Thank you for your life-giving Spirit that helps us become more like you.
Amen.

Baptism and Renewal of Vows
Baptism is a way of identifying ourselves with the mission and purpose of Jesus Christ. It is a sign that, through Christ, we have passed through the waters of chaos and emerged to a new life in God. It is a reminder that, through the Holy Spirit, God washes away our sins and that we are accepted, loved, and welcomed into his kingdom.
Gabriel, do you wish to be baptised?
I do.
Friends, today, do you wish to reaffirm your baptism vows?
We do.
Sponsors, God knows each of us by name and we are his. Will you pray for Gabriel and help him to follow Christ?
We will.
St. Mark’s, we thank God for these people who have come to be baptised today or to renew the vows made at their baptism. Christ loves them and welcomes them into his Church. Will you support them on their journey of faith, and help them to live and grow within God’s family?
We will.
We all wander far from God and lose our way. Christ comes to find us and welcomes us home. In baptism we respond to his call. Therefore, today is an opportunity for you all to recommit your lives to God.
Do you turn away from sin?
We do.
Do you reject evil?
We do.
Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?
We do.
Do you trust in him as Lord?
We do.
Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan, where the Holy Spirit came upon him and revealed him as the beloved Son of the Father. Jesus sent his followers to baptise all who turn to him so may these candidates now be cleansed in the water of life and filled with your Spirit. May they know that they are loved as your children, safe in Christ for ever.
Amen.
The candidates come one at a time into the water to be baptised.
Name, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Name, confirm your faith in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross.
As each candidate leaves the water we cheer and clap!
Friends, do not be ashamed of Jesus for we are his for ever. Let us stand bravely with him against all the powers of evil, and remain faithful to him to the end of our lives. May almighty God deliver us all from the powers of darkness, and lead us in the light and obedience of Christ.
Amen.
As the candidates dry themselves, we sing!
Song: Make Way
Communion
(Sung a cappella)
The peace of the Lord be always with you
And also with you.
On the night you were betrayed you took the bread.
After giving thanks you broke it and said
This is my body broken for you, and as you eat it remember me.
This is my body broken for you, and as you eat it remember me.
On the night you were betrayed you held the cup.
After giving thanks you lifted it up.
This is my blood poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me.
This is my blood poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me.
So we thank you for the wine and for the bread
For we see the life you gave and the blood you shed
And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood
And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood
Prayer
Holy God, like Jonah, when I am in distress, when I feel overwhelmed with worry, or when I feel swamped by stress:
Remind me to cry out to you.
For, Lord Jesus, you have already saved me. When you died, I died, but when you rose again, I rose with you.
You gave me the gift of life.
Forgive me when I put my trust in things of this world; and forgive me when I have ignored your love. Thank you that you have put your Spirit in me.
Thank you that my name is written on your heart.
I will serve you and be obedient to your calling; that through my words and my actions the world may know about your love.
Amen.
