Anglican Theological Institute of Bermuda (ATIB)
Providing Theological Education, Discipleship programmes, and Training for Ministry to Bermuda.
About
In 2016, the Bishop of Bermuda sought to instigate a programme of Training for Ministry for the Anglican Church of Bermuda that followed the best practice for Theological Education recognised around the Anglican Communion.
Through the appointment of a Director of Training and Discipleship, and the formation of an Affiliation Agreement with St Mellitus College, London (UK), The Anglican Church of Bermuda has developed courses of Theological Education and Formation as preparation for Licensed Lay Ministry and Ordination.
Training and Education for ministry programmes are open to:
- Bermuda residents who, having been through a diocesan process of discernment, have been recommended and sent by the bishop* for Training for Licensed Lay Ministry or Training for Ordination
- Bermuda residents whose ministry has been recognised by their Parish*, supported by their Incumbent* and Vestry*, wish to enrich and deepen their Lay Ministry in the parish (this may include ministries such as Sunday School Leader, Bible Study Leader, Worship Leader, Pastoral Visitor, Parish Evangelist etc.)
- Bermuda residents who wish to deepen their knowledge of our Christian Faith, gain greater confidence in the Scriptures, and grow as a disciple of Jesus
* Christians of all denominations are welcomed on ATIB courses, and we value our tradition of training alongside Christians of all traditions. For formal and recognised ministries, each denomination will have its own processes and these should first be discussed with the local church, and then with the Course Director to ensure ecumenical students get the best experience of training for ministry.
The Thomas and Winifred Nisbett Lectures in Biblical Studies
The Nisbett Lectures are Public Lectures delivered in the Anglican Theological Institute of Bermuda.
Inaugurated in 2012 by The Rt Revd Richard Chartres KCVO ChStJ PC FSA, then the Bishop of London, “The Canon Thomas and Winfred Nisbett Lectures in Biblical Studies” (‘The Nisbett Lectures’) were conceived by the then “Diocesan Committee on Education and Evangelism” of the Anglican Church of Bermuda to sponsor and promote an annual lecture in the Diocese open to both Anglicans and non-Anglicans, lay and ordained.
The aims of the Nisbett Lectures are to foster theological understanding and debate in the Diocese; to provide a forum for learning in Christian Biblical theology; to promote growth in faith and enable the members of the Anglican Church of Bermuda to engage with and address the issues of the day from a mature Biblical perspective; and to encourage and develop the outreach of the Church in evangelism and mission.
The Nisbett Lectures have been privileged to welcome such Theologians, Biblical Scholars, and Faith Practioners as The Revd Dr Alister McGrath (Professor in Science and Religion at the University of Oxford UK), The Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin (79th Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons), Dr Sarah Snyder (Archbishop of Canterbury’s Advisor for Reconciliation), Dr David Deane (Associate Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology, Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax CA), and The Revd Dr Sharon Prentis (Beginning Theology Course Coordinator at St Mellitus College, London UK).
